The Block - ShowPig.com It's more than a show pig

It’s graduation time. For some folks, this means gearing up to find their first “real” job. This can be an intimidating time for new graduates. But, if you grew up exhibiting, raising or judging swine, you likely are a step ahead of many of the other applicants. Here’s Showpig.com’s tips for the job hunt.

DRESS FOR THE PART
You’ve likely been told to “Dress for the job you want.” Luckily, for showpig enthusiasts many business essentials, such as a nice button-down shirt, are already hanging in your closet from your time in the show ring. If you would like to beef up your interview-worthy wardrobe, check out AgCareer's guide to being a sharp dressed man and a chic business chick.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR RESUME
Most people think that once you write your resume you’re done. But, the best career searchers will encourage you to customize your resumes for the job you’re applying for. Since many resumes are initially sorted electronically, keywords from the job description become extra important. Sure, it’s a lot of work, but look at it like writing sale descriptions on littermates – a similar pedigree with different emphasis.

PROOF READ, THEN REPEAT
Have you ever been annoyed by the ads reading, “Guilts for sell?” That’s why it’s important to proofread your resume. Read it, read it again and then pass it along to someone else to read. You get one first impression with a hiring manager, and often that impression hinges on the words you typed onto a single piece of paper.

CALL ON YOUR CONNECTIONS
Showing pigs is a great way to meet people throughout the agricultural industry. Whether you realize it or not, the people who you’ve met along the way, leaders, Extension educators, judging coaches, judges and even your peers will likely be the people you’ll work with in the agricultural industry. Not only can they offer invaluable advice about different careers, but they can also serve as great references. Don’t forget to use your network when you’re on the job hunt as well. They can keep their eyes and ears open for a great opportunity for you too.

EXPAND YOUR SEARCH
Although you might want to work close to home, it’s important to keep an open mind when you’re looking for your first job. Just think how hard it would be to find the perfect show barrow, if you could only look for him on your own street. By widening your search area, you might just find your dream job a little farther away from home.
