Q&A with Lexi Ammann — Financial Analyst for The Maschhoffs
The show pig industry is more than just ribbons and banners — it's a community built on passion, hard work, and the drive to shape the future of agriculture. In our newest blog series, Showmen Currently in the Field, we’re thrilled to spotlight Lexi Ammann, a financial analyst with The Maschhoffs and a supporter of youth in agriculture.
From her beginnings as a young girl showing pigs in Iowa to her influential career in the swine industry, Lexi’s journey demonstrates her commitment to the next generation of agricultural leaders. Her path is a testament to the unique opportunities that arise when passion meets persistence. Let’s dive into Lexi’s inspiring story, her experiences in the show pig industry, and her advice for aspiring young leaders.
Q: ShowPig
Lexi, thank you for joining us! To start, can you share your background and how you got involved in the pork industry?
A: Lexi Ammann
Absolutely! I grew up in Iowa and started showing pigs when I was about seven or eight years old. My family and I fell in love with the show pig industry early on. We were heavily involved in the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series, traveling across Iowa and nearby states during the summer. I also participated in 4-H, FFA, and the National Junior Swine Association (NJSA), which gave me opportunities to show at national levels. These experiences sparked my passion for the show industry and shaped my career path.
Q: ShowPig
You mentioned growing up in Iowa, but now you’re based in Illinois. How did that transition happen?
A: Lexi Ammann
It’s a bit of a pig fairy tale! I met my husband, Devin, through NJSA at a leadership conference. We were friends for a few years, dating long-distance while he attended Kansas State and I was at Iowa State. Eventually, we got married and moved to Highland, Illinois, where his family owns a business and raises show pigs. It’s been a journey, and now we’re raising our 14-month-old daughter, Adah Mae, who will likely be part of the next generation in the show ring!
Q: ShowPig
Your role at The Maschhoffs has evolved over your career and is something you probably didn’t see coming when you graduated college with a degree in Ag Communications and Animal Science. Can you tell us about how you got started there and what you do now?
A: Lexi Ammann
I first got connected to The Maschhoffs through NJSA, which they are a major supporter of the organization. I had the opportunity to learn about their operations during a leadership experience program they sponsor for students. Fast forward a few years, and when I moved to Illinois, I reached out to explore career opportunities.
Initially, I started in the supply chain team, which gave me a great foundation in understanding the logistics of pork production. After four years, I transitioned to my current role as a financial analyst. It’s a big change from my ag communications background, but I’ve learned so much about data analysis, working with production teams, and contributing to the overall success of the company.
Q: ShowPig
It’s inspiring how you’ve embraced new opportunities. What advice would you give young showmen or students looking to transition into the larger pork industry?
A: Lexi Ammann
First, time flies when you’re having fun, so cherish the moments you have in the ring and thank those who helped you get there—your parents, advisors, and mentors.
Second, keep an open mind. You might not know your exact career path, and that’s okay! Take every opportunity to learn, whether it’s through NJSA, Team Purebred, FFA, or internships. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone because those experiences often lead to unexpected and rewarding opportunities.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to explore different areas of the industry. Whether it’s production, communications, finance, or leadership roles, there’s a place for everyone who’s passionate about agriculture.
Q: ShowPig
The Maschhoffs are known for their focus on youth development. Can you tell us more about the Leadership Experience Externship?
A: Lexi Ammann
Of course! The Leadership Experience Externship is a three-day program that introduces students to commercial pork production. It’s designed to provide a high-level overview of our operations, leadership training, and networking opportunities with industry professionals.
We want to bridge the gap between the show pig and commercial industries by exposing students to areas they may not have considered. We also incorporate leadership tools like DISC training and team-building exercises to help participants grow professionally. It’s an incredible program, and I’m proud to be part of something that helps shape the next generation of leaders in agriculture.
Q: ShowPig
What’s your hope for the future of the show pig and pork industries?
A: Lexi Ammann
I hope we continue to inspire young people to explore all the opportunities the agriculture industry has to offer. The show pig industry is a great entry point for so many of us, but there’s so much more to discover, from commercial production to leadership roles.
I’m also passionate about fostering connections between the show pig and commercial sides of the industry. Both have unique strengths, and I believe that collaboration will ensure a bright future for pork production.
Lexi Ammann’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and a commitment to growth. Her journey from the show ring to The Maschhoffs highlights the diverse opportunities in agriculture and the impact of strong leadership. Stay tuned for next month’s A Seat at the Table, where we’ll feature another inspiring leader shaping the future of the pork industry.
